This blog, Agriculture 2.0, is a space to talk about the future of agriculture.  There are many emerging trends to discuss — from the prospects for mainline crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat, to the implications of “big data” on agronomics, to the emergence of a new class of crops that are trying to tap non-food markets.  Agriculture 2.0 is maintained by the staff at TerViva.

TerViva is developing a tree crop, called pongamia, that produces a harvest similar to soybeans.  The thesis behind our company:  significant amounts of land are no longer suitable for traditional agriculture, due to high costs of production, declining availability of water, and new pests and diseases.  At the same time, land that is still well-suited for traditional agriculture is in being sold at record high prices, thereby driving down cap rates on that land.  TerViva allows landowners to re-establish the utility of unproductive ag land.  With our tree crop, pongamia, landowners can produce high-oleic vegetable oil and high-protein animal feed, both of which are in strong demand in today’s economy.

    Very impressive writing on Pongamia pinnata. I am an evaluator on Government of India funded Tree Borne Oilseeds Development Projects in India. I have seen good agricultural practices in the farmers field. But the utilisation of bio-fuel from pongamia is still to come in India. I will be happy to find many more inspirational writing across the world which we can apply in the farmers’ field in India. Thanks and Best Wishes.
